Conversation with Mario Vanini
This beautiful interview takes us on a half-century journey with Mario Vanini, exploring the adventures and special moments he has experienced at Veragouth and Xilema. As he celebrates 50 years with the company, Mario warmly shares his fondest memories, reflecting on how his role has evolved over the years with a touch of nostalgia and deep affection for both the company and his colleagues. Filled with amusing anecdotes and valuable insights, this interview paints an authentic portrait of a man who has devoted a lifetime to personal and professional growth.
In these last 50 years here in Veragouth and Xilema, what has been a moment that has particularly impressed you?
Oh, there have been many memorable moments, but if I had to choose one, I would say my first day here, 4 February 1974, at 08:15. At first it was just a temporary job, but lo and behold, I am still here after more than half a century!
How has your role changed over the years?
From the simplest tasks such as handling postal correspondence and cleaning the offices, I moved on to deal with increasingly complex administrative tasks as the company grew. I still remember when we introduced the first PC in 1986, it was a revolution that made us more efficient in managing accounts and budgets.
What is the project you are most proud of?
Without a doubt, obtaining ISO 9001 certification and pushing ahead with the digitisation process are among the most rewarding moments of my career here. These steps have really improved our competitiveness and the quality of the service we offer.
What tools did you use in the beginning?
In the beginning, there was “nonno Remigio” (‘Grandpa Remigio’), as we affectionately called him. He was the one who handled the cash payments, going straight to the factory to hand out the salaries after asking how many hours they had worked. That mutual trust was something that was unfortunately lost a little. Then, with time, we moved on to the recording of working hours through time-stamping systems and more structured administrative management.
What values have guided you during these years?
Humility and flexibility have always been at the heart of my approach to work. I remember an episode that made a deep impression on me, when Mario Veragouth started loading goods for a customer without making it known that he was the boss. That lesson in humility has stayed with me.
Did you receive any valuable advice?
Rather than specific advice, it was my everyday experiences that taught me the importance of adapting to change and continuing to learn, especially when it comes to technology and administrative challenges.
What made you stay here for so long?
The growth and innovation of Veragouth and Xilema have always inspired me. Seeing the Veragouth family face the challenges of the market with determination has motivated me to always give my best.
Is there anything you have learnt here that you never expected?
The discovery of the importance of a solid quality system was really surprising. I am now convinced that it is fundamental to any successful company.
If you had to choose one song to describe your experience here, what would it be?
I would choose ‘Volare’ by Domenico Modugno. It’s really been an ongoing adventure here: an adventure that, since 1974, has never seen a proper landing. And even though I can see the runway now, I just hope the undercarriage opens properly!
What is the funniest memory you have of your office or colleagues?
Certainly the trip to London to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary was unforgettable. Mario even wrote a poem for the occasion, it was really exciting and fun at the same time.
If you had to replace computers with technology from the past, what would you choose?
Maybe a week of working with just pen and paper, to appreciate modern technology more!
Advice for current and future employees?
Follow the Veragouth and Xilema family with love and dedication and success will be guaranteed! Good luck to all!
