The Strength of Wood Between Speed and Precision
Contemporary architecture often challenges traditional boundaries, blending materials and concepts in a unique expression of creativity and functionality. A prime example of this technical audacity is the new Porsche Center Lugano by the Amag Group, a project that marries the aesthetics of a natural material like wood with the sophisticated technology of sports cars.
The project, designed by Frigerio Engineering, was conceived to expand the existing center, providing space for tire services and offices. However, what was initially intended to be a simple traditional technology addition developed into a unique and complex architectural work, thanks to the collaboration with Veragouth and Xilema of Bedano, responsible for the development and realization of the structure.
The boldest feature was the preference for a wood structure over the use of concrete and bricks. The result is an elegant composition of laminated wood beams (BSH) for the load-bearing structures, Xlam panels for walls and floors, and steel reinforcements to support heavy loads. When one thinks of a garage, it is hard to imagine it with wood interior paneling, and precisely this unexpected aesthetic quality, along with the engineering, is the project’s focal point.
The special design of the structures ensured the safety and stability of the building, transforming an ordinary building into something pioneering. Considering the heavy loads and the large spans required, Veragouth and Xilema developed a system of steel beams encapsulated in wood panels to protect them from fire, thus achieving a maximum span of 12.5 meters over a total area of 1500 sqm and a fire resistance of R60.
Today, this building is a precursor, and tomorrow, we might tell you about a multi-story parking garage, for example. The elegance of wood, the power of sports cars, and the mastery of prefabrication offer a unique experience both for car enthusiasts and construction professionals.
Particular attention was paid to safety, especially for the tire warehouse, where the risk of fires was greater. Thanks to careful design and the coating of steel beams with wood, maximum safety was ensured without compromising the aesthetics of the building.
The combination of materials offers impressive structural strength and a unique aesthetic. The natural texture of wood harmoniously blends with the brilliance of the displayed car bodies, creating an atmosphere of luxury and refinement, qualities that immediately come to mind when thinking of the Porsche brand.
Prefabrication was key to the project’s success, allowing for rapid execution and exact details. The prefabricated components were prepared in the workshop and assembled on-site, significantly reducing construction times despite the challenges imposed by limited daylight hours during winter.
The organization of the construction site was equally fundamental to the project’s success. Despite the limited space, perfect coordination among various actors ensured an efficient and seamless workflow. The prefabrication of key elements like the stairwell and ramps further optimized timing and reduced the need for additional equipment on site.
The synergistic collaboration between highly skilled craftsmen and the construction company was an indispensable aspect of the building’s realization, where artisanal mastery blends with management and coordination skills to ensure excellent quality standards and a top-notch architectural result.
Finally, a prefabricated bridge connects the new Porsche Center to the existing building, facilitating traffic flow and creating a seamless experience for visitors. The ramp leading to the display parking, built with an igloo structure, adds a touch of innovation and originality to the overall design.
Ultimately, the new Porsche Center in Pambio Noranco is much more than just a commercial building; it is a trailblazer showing where we can go with the enormous constructive potential of wood. Today, this building is a precursor, and tomorrow, we might tell you about a multi-story parking garage, for example. The elegance of wood, the power of sports cars, and the mastery of prefabrication offer a unique experience both for car enthusiasts and construction professionals.
