Dylan Arena

An apprentice's experience at Veragouth and Xilema

What is your role within the company? Can you describe it in detail?

Within the company, my main role is to assist my colleagues by preparing the necessary materials for their work. In parallel, I have the opportunity to learn by directly observing how they work. Initially, my activity was mainly observational, but with time and the acquisition of more skills, I have become more autonomous and now also actively contribute in the framing and insulation phases.

During your time with the company, have you perceived an evolution in your skills? What skills do you feel you have learnt during this time?

Yes, I have greatly perceived an evolution in my skills since I started working here. Initially, there were many activities and terms that were completely unknown to me. Now, I can carry out several of these activities independently, although my colleagues continue to supervise me to make sure that everything proceeds correctly. This allows me to be much more useful within the team.

How important has the teaching received from your colleagues been so far and why?

The teaching I received from my colleagues was fundamental to my professional and personal development. Not only did they pass on to me technical skills essential to my role, but they also contributed significantly to my growth as a person. Their guidance and support have been crucial in my journey within the company.

What has been the most rewarding moment you have experienced in your work so far?

One of the most rewarding moments I have experienced so far in my work was when, for the first time, I was able to work independently on a bench. Being able to interpret and follow technical drawings without the need for explanations was a significant milestone for me, marking a turning point in my ability to actively contribute to the company’s projects.

Was there a project you were particularly passionate about? Why?

Yes, the project I was particularly passionate about was the San Vittore project. I think my passion stemmed from the fact that I was able to understand it thoroughly. On this construction site, I had the opportunity to produce the workbook, in which I explained all the processes in detail. My ability to accurately document the work was facilitated by the fact that I was very passionate about it.

What skills have you developed working here that you consider most valuable?

The most valuable skill I have developed since I started working here is manual dexterity. This skill has enabled me to perform practical work with more precision and efficiency, greatly improving the quality of my daily work.

What challenges do you foresee in the near future of your career path?

The main challenge I foresee in my near future is to pass the fourth-year exams and to be able to qualify as an AFC carpenter. This represents an important goal in my career path and will require commitment and dedication.

If you had to describe your experience in the company as a journey, what would be the main stages you have gone through and would like to go through and why?

The most challenging stages I faced included adapting to the new working hours. Going from school hours to having to get up early every morning and go home at 5pm was really tough. However, once I got used to the pace, it became more manageable.

Another significant step was the acquisition of manual skills. Before I chose this job, I came from a school where I had never done manual activities. At the beginning, I knew how to do almost nothing, but with the help of my colleagues, I learnt a lot.

The most important step I would like to take in the future is to become completely independent at work. I would like to be able to take a task and complete it without the need for explanations or assistance, doing it independently without interrupting my colleagues.
