The intervention has the dual purpose of renovating and expanding the school built in the 1960s, and building a double gym and canteen to serve the municipal school sector. The project of the renovating process preserves the whole body of the building, adapts the spaces to modern pedagogical needs, restores the structures, renews obsolete finishes and carries out an energy adjustment according to new regulations. The double gymnasium is dug into the ground allowing to maintain a proportionate volume with the school building. Its roof, completely accessible, becomes a new square for the use of the school and the public. The new school canteen is located on this level. An important aspect of the project was the attention paid to external public spaces, as well as the fundamental mending of the pedestrian connections that characterize the urban fabric of Massagno.
