The expressive power of wood in large-scale public architecture

Veragouth e Xilema is proud to contribute to the construction of the new headquarters of the Division of Urban Spaces of the City of Lugano, a large-scale project in which wood asserts itself as a structural, technical, and expressive material. The project “Ginger and Fred”, winner of the competition launched by the City, was developed by the interdisciplinary team led by Epure Architecture et Urbanisme SA of Moudon. The proposal offers a contemporary interpretation of the relationship between architecture, the riverside landscape, and public function.
Our carpentry division is involved in one of the most significant interventions: the construction of the glulam timber structure, which shapes and defines the rhythm of the architecture. Resting on a reinforced concrete base, the structural grid develops with a spacing of 4.80 meters, composed of timber frames, beams, and columns, for a total volume of 690 m³. The walls are made of framed elements and XLAM panels, while the mixed floors—covering an area of more than 8,300 m²—combine the lightness and precision of wood with the solidity of structural concrete.
The project required highly coordinated management of materials and construction systems, ensuring millimetric tolerances and top-quality execution at every stage. The use of OSB as a technical finish and gypsum-fiber cladding completed the intervention with solutions that guarantee performance in terms of safety and durability.
This Minergie®-A certified building is not only a cutting-edge public work, but also concrete proof of the potential of timber construction in large-scale contemporary architecture.
